5/28/2023 0 Comments The shock doctrine amazonJust one day earlier, Cuomo had announced a similar partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop “a smarter education system”. “The first priorities of what we’re trying to do,” Schmidt said, “are focused on telehealth, remote learning, and broadband … We need to look for solutions that can be presented now, and accelerated, and use technology to make things better.” Lest there be any doubt that the former Google chair’s goals were purely benevolent, his video background featured a framed pair of golden angel wings. The inspiration for these uncharacteristically good vibes was a video visit from the former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who joined the governor’s briefing to announce that he will be heading up a panel to reimagine New York state’s post-Covid reality, with an emphasis on permanently integrating technology into every aspect of civic life.

I understand the concerns with that book’s portrayal of the U.S. I certainly wouldn’t want to be Amber, and I certainly wouldn’t want to be friends with her.įorever Amber is frequently compared to Gone With the Wind, which was published just a few years before. These reactions also make me wonder if anyone read the thing through to the end. What was going to happen to society if women got the idea that they could run around as much as the men did? Of course, what shocked people was all the adultery, not to mention the abortions. Although the book is remembered for its sex scenes, there really isn’t one in the entire book…but what you will find in many passages is “fashion porn”, the attraction for women living under war time clothing restrictions is obvious. When you read it, you might wonder what all the fuss was about. states and several countries overseas, which naturally made it more popular! When it was published, it was banned in numerous U.S. If you’re of a certain age, you might remember finding shoved onto the back of a book shelf in your house. The entryways that lead to this sanctuary are often hidden, sometimes on forest floors, sometimes in private homes, sometimes in plain sight. Far beneath the surface of the earth, upon the shores of the Starless Sea, there is a labyrinthine collection of tunnels and rooms filled with stories. " the Don Draper of Japanese fiction, the sort of person everyone knows without ever really knowing."―Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Driven by desires that are at once unique and common, the women in this book are modern, familiar to us, and still mysterious. Like a modern Decameron, this humorous, sensual, and touching novel by one of Japan’s best-selling and most beloved writers is a powerful and embracing portrait of the human comedy in ten voices. Still clinging to the vivid memory of his warm breath and his indecipherable sentences, ten women tell their stories as they attempt to recreate the image of the unfathomable Nishino. “If you like Haruki Murakami and Yoko Ogawa, it’s a safe bet that you’ll love The Ten Loves of Nishino.”- DozoDomo (France)Įach woman has succumbed, even if only for an hour, to that seductive, imprudent, and furtively feline man who drifted so naturally into their lives. Selected as Reese Witherspoon’s February book club pick, Pearse’s debut novel delivers all the atmosphere, chilling intrigue, and hair-raising suspense that I hoped for and more. This debut novel blends elements of Gothic suspense with a locked room mystery set in the Swiss Alps, and the result is an irresistible, just-one-more-page thriller perfect for your next wintry read. The Verdict: a gripping locked room mystery with Gothic touchesĪs I write this review, I’m in a bit of a reading slump, and I blame it entirely on how much I loved Sarah Pearse’s atmospheric, sinister mystery THE SANATORIUM. 5/27/2023 0 Comments Book i was anastasiaThere are two characters, Princess Anastasia Romanov who is rumored to have been killed along with her family and Anna Anderson who claims to be Anastasia (assuming that Anastasia miraculously survives the attack on the family). In fairness, others have given it rave reviews. From a reader’s viewpoint, I can report that it was challenging and difficult to remain engaged with Anna’s story because of the backward telling. From a writer’s viewpoint, I can imagine that the creative and ambitious structure of the book earns many accolades. Although well written, extensively researched, and creatively structured, I struggled with the backwards telling of Anna’s story. Overall, I enjoyed reading the history of Anastasia Romanov and exploring the controversy surrounding her death. In this story, readers have an opportunity to form their own opinion.Īmazon Rating (August): 3.9 Stars My Thoughts: For years, rumors that Anastasia did survive circulate through Europe. People who don’t believe her call her Anna Anderson. Bolshevik executioners claim that no one survived, but in 1920 a young woman surfaces and claims to be the Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia. Summary:įor nearly a century, many have speculated about the survival of Anastasia Romanov after her famous political family was forced into a basement in Siberia and executed by firing squad in 1918. *This post contains Amazon affiliate links.
